Presently, India stands second after China in population and being estimated that with this growth India will overcome China within --- years. On comparing the land area, India;s land area (1,269,219.3 sq mi) is almost 1/3rd to that of China (3,705,386 sq mi). With the present situation, the average per capita space for Indians comes near 10 feet x 10 feet (which includes room for sleeping, cooking, washing and toilet). According to Times of India, “one in every three urban Indians lives in homes too cramped to exceed even the minimum requirements of a prison cell in the US.”

Statics shows that 41.6% of population is living below the new international poverty line (~ Rs. 55 per day), which shows India has 1/3rd of global poor. A report by the state-run NCEUS in 2007, state that: 65% of Indians (~ 750 million people), “lived on less than Rs 20 per day, with most working in informal labor sector with no job or social security, living in abject poverty”.

More than half of Indian Children are malnourished. Number of Indian underweight children is approximately double that of Sub-Saharan Africa.

The reason for above mention statics is not that India is bad at its economy. She has eleventh largest economy in world by nominal GDP and fourth largest by purchasing power parity. The main issue is the population. With the democracy rule in India – one can not even make any rule (eg. 1 child rule in China) to slow down the population growth. And this growth is nearly double in lower class society as compare to higher class. Middle class family always comes in middle. Often these days they have started following 1 child rule, as they can not afford studies and well-being of more than 1 child. But I am unable to understand why the lower class people don’t understand it. Even though they do not have anything for themselves they have 3-4 kids to stand on the road and beg.

Indian government is working hard by developing many family planning schemes, education to women especially in urban areas, etc. But none of the schemes is able to work effectively. The reasons are many and are not hidden from any of us.

The point which I am raising is, can we all together can help and help our country to fight with this issue. Suggestion is to celebrate one complete year may be 2012-2013 as no birth year in India. And participation from every hospital, nursing home, maternity clinic would be must. If things are restricted from the first hand only then it will help. With this, government can keep a huge fine on the birth of child in that year. The issue still remains with the people who live in urban areas – for them a threat of huge payment which might end up to the sale of their house, or land might help India temporarily to deal with the situation.

Do, you agree that government should declare one complete year as NO BIRTH YEAR – the first ever in world and the first of its kind.
